grabbed from my friend  JanJan www.northwolf.multiply.com

JPEG is actually a very destructive file format.  Everytime you perform certain actions like opening the file, saving it, as well as certain types of edit-actions, you are slowly degrading and eventually destroying the file.

Some of the actions recommended by experts to avoid this loss include:

1)  For vertical shots, realign them using Photoshop, and not using the Windows image browser

2)  When post-processing your pictures, using Adjustment Layers instead of directly using Image>Adjustments is preferrable since Adjustment Layers is a non-destructive action

3)  When editing your JPEG files, convert them first to TIFF and other more robust graphic file types.  After editing, you can reconvert to JPEG.

4)  Do not edit your JPEG files unless you have to.

I would appreciate the thoughts of the techies and the learned on this matter.  What can we do to preserve our JPEG files?
